Atlanta Police Officer Crashes Into Utility, Telephone Poles And Apartment Complex Gates On Memorial Drive

Crash blamed on stalled vehicle in the street

An Atlanta police officer went to Grady Memorial Hospital early Monday after crashing into the gate of an abandoned apartment complex off Memorial Drive in Edgewood, a department spokeswoman said.

The officer gave investigators this account:

He was headed east on Memorial in the left lane and had crossed the Memorial Terrace intersection at the crest of a hill when he saw a stalled vehicle in his lane.

He swerved to the right to avoid crashing into the vehicle and hit another police cruiser that was was travelling east on Memorial in the right lane.

He swerved back into the left lane, lost control of his cruiser, which spun out and flipped over before crashing into the gates of the old apartment complex at 1462 Memorial, a utility pole and telephone pole.

There was no immediate description of the stalled vehicle, which the officer said left the scene.
