Suspect fled from Kirkwood neighborhood after hitting officer with a motor vehicle

Atlanta police are looking for Khalif Edwards of Decatur, whom they say is wanted on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, simple battery, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and cruelty to children in the third degree.

Police say Edwards was involved in an altercation with Atlanta Police Inv. Patrick Apoian Thursday night on College Avenue near Sisson Avenue in Kirkwood.

Edwards fled in his gold Honda Accord, allegedly striking Apoian, a nine-year veteran.

Edwards had a woman and her two children, ages 1 and 2, in the car with him during the incident. She has not been charged and is cooperating fully with investigators, APD spokeman Carlos Campos said.

The Honda was found within two hours near I-20 and Gresham Road.

The children were found shortly thereafter, Campos said.

"The specifics of the encounter between Inv. Apoian and Mr. Edwards remain under investigation. We are still in the process of interviewing witnesses, including a re-interview of Inv. Apoian for more details," he said.

Crime Stoppers Atlanta has increased its usual $2,000 reward to $5,000 for Edwards' arrest and indictment. Anyone with information is asked to call 404-577-TIPS (8477).
