Silent Encounters: Art in Body Language is a unique production where audience is free. Free to roam, free to join actors on stage, and free to just sit back and watch the show. The audience is invited into a cozy atmosphere to enjoy the experience of living in another world if only for a few moments. Each night something different and special will take place, from special access to Eyedrum’s Art Gallery, to a possible impromptu concert. Anything can happen.
About the show:
The Artizen company has created an immersive reality production that combines theater, film, installation, and visual art to create an experience where our two deaf performers interact with audience members as they live onstage. Silent Encounters: Art in Body Language is about Singer and Ant, best friends and roommates, who are deaf and non-verbal. They live a perfect life, isolated in their world, only communicating with each other. As they go about life and expand their circle of visitors, they encounter difficulties of sickness, loneliness, separation, and isolation. As Deaf people these struggles are intensified by complications with communicating, and lead to a surprising conclusion.
This show explores how we connect and communicate. The dichotomy of our complex language is at the heart of this work. We have a plethora of words to allow specificity in communication; however, we use this veritable shmorgishborg to mislead, cheat, confuse, distract, and often flat out lie. What would happen if we all lost our ability to speak words yet had to communicate? Would this communication be more truthful? Would it be clearer? As hearing people we sometimes take for granted those senses that others do not have, like hearing. We challenge our performers and our audience to find a deeper, truer way to communicate feelings, desires, and ideas by allowing only nonverbal communication.
