Renting a Dumpster vs Hiring Junk Removal Company

Removing large amounts of trash and junk from your home requires you either rent a dumpster or hire a junk removal service. The key is knowing when to choose one over the other.

So, you have a lot of junk and the motivation to finally clean it all out, but what’s the best way to go about getting rid of it? The two best options when it comes to removing trash in bulk include renting a dumpster or hiring a junk removal company. Which one is right for you?

Dumpster Rentals

A dumpster rental will almost always be the more economical choice between the two. The only exception to this rule is when you’re throwing out just a few items – something like an old refrigerator or rundown furniture.

Renting a dumpster also offers the convenience of letting you keep it for usually up to seven days. This helps in situations like new construction, roofing jobs or other home renovation projects. If you’re just looking for a quick way to get rid of the junk and don’t want a dumpster taking up space in your driveway, you may want to consider hiring a junk removal company.

Junk Removal Company

Hiring a junk removal service in Atlanta offers three primary benefits over renting a dumpster:

  1. It’s quicker
  2. The junk removal service does all the lifting; you don’t have to lift a finger
  3. You can often get rid of items that some dumpster rental companies prohibit, such as tires

The downside to hiring a junk removal company is its slightly steeper cost. While an Atlanta-area dumpster rental costs typically between $300 and $600 per week depending upon size, a junk removal company will charge a bit more than this for the same sized load. This isn’t surprising considering the junk removal company does all the work for you.

As previously mentioned, a junk removal service may actually be a more inexpensive choice when trying to offload a few large items, such as an old bookcase along with a couple appliances. Why spend $300 for a 10-yard dumpster rental for just a few items? In this example, a junk removal service may charge as little as $70 to $100 to remove the items for you.

Be sure to estimate the size of your load before deciding between renting a dumpster and calling a junk removal company. If the size of your load is larger than about 7 cubic-yards – cleaning out a small basement – than renting a dumpster is the most economical choice. On the other hand, hire a junk removal service to handle loads less than 7 cubic-yards.
