Broadway Balances America" series to highlight new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC December 1 and 8

Debuts at Atlanta's Fox Theatre March 1-6

The award-winning morning show The Balancing Act® on the Lifetime® Channel will turn the spotlight on the all-new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, presented by Broadway Across America, in a featured segment airing on Tuesday, December 1 at 7:30 a.m. Viewers will have the chance to go behind-the-scenes of the production, as part of the “Broadway Balances America” series. This show will re-air on December 8, 2015 at 7:30 a.m. on Lifetime.

The six-part special series “Broadway Balances America” provides interviews highlighting the shows that are featured on Broadway Across America’s 2015-2016 Broadway series nationwide - from Boston to Costa Mesa, from Houston to Minneapolis, and everywhere in between.

As part of a North American tour, this lavish new production will make its debut at the Fox Theatre for a limited engagement from March 1-6 as part of the 2015/2016 Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta Season.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC will play in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre March 1-6. The performance schedule is:

Tuesday 8 p.m.

Wednesday-Thursday 7:30 p.m.

Friday 8 p.m.

Saturday 2 p.m., 8 p.m.

Sunday 1 p.m., 6:30 p.m.

This fifth episode of the six-part “Broadway Balances America” series explores THE SOUND OF MUSIC – a timeless Broadway musical loved the world over. As a new national tour hits the road, The Balancing Act® correspondent Amber Milt will talk with three-time Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien about his authentication of these iconic female characters, showing the very real and relatable women balancing issues that are relevant today, instead of the archetype we have come to expect. O’Brien’s intentions to “tear off the varnish of the past and reveal one of the great, fresh glories of musical theater” will be revealed. From early rehearsals in New York to its opening night, viewers will have the opportunity to see the process by which this American classic is resurrected for a whole new audience.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. This new production is directed by Jack O’Brien (credits include: Hairspray, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Coast of Utopia), and choreographed by Danny Mefford (Broadway’s Fun Home, The Bridges of Madison County and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). The design and production team is comprised of Douglas Schmidt, Set Design (Tony Award® nominee: 42nd Street, Into the Woods); Jane Greenwood, Costume Design (2014 recipient of Special Tony Award ® for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), Natasha Katz, Lighting Design (Four-time Tony Award® winner: Once, Aida, The Coast of Utopia, The Glass Menagerie) and Ken Travis, Sound Design (Aladdin, Newsies, Memphis).
