The public is invited to an educational workshop on Environmental Justice at Atlanta City Hall hosted by the Atlanta Beltline, Inc. (ABI). As part of its mission to build a sustainable redevelopment and mobility project that benefits all communities, ABI is developing an Environmental Justice Policy. The workshop will will include an overview of ABI’s draft policy; provide details on remediation efforts to date; an interactive learning activity on Environmental Justice; a question and answer session.
The Atlanta BeltLine is a sustainable redevelopment project that will provide a network of public parks, multi-use trails, transit and affordable housing along a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown and connecting many neighborhoods directly to each other. Much of this development will include the remediation of roughly 1,000 acres of brownfields, making it one of the largest brownfield remediation efforts in the country.
Historically, industry and other developments with complex land uses have disproportionately affected lower income and minority communities. Implementing an Environmental Justice Policy for the Atlanta BeltLine will ensure that the public is educated and informed about federally regulated environmental challenges ABI discovers over the life of the project.
