Kincaid Named Head Coach of Georgia State Softball

Roger Kincaid, who led the Georgia State softball team to the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association title, has been elevated from interim status to the permanent head coach of the GSU program, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick announced.

Kincaid took over the program on an interim basis on Feb. 21 after long-time head coach Bob Heck stepped down. He guided the Panthers to a 31-20 record, including a 15-5 mark in CAA play. In the postseason, Georgia State knocked off perennial power Hofstra to win the CAA championship for the first time and earn GSU’s first NCAA berth since 1994. For his efforts, Kincaid was named Co-Coach of the Year in the CAA.

A member of the GSU staff since 2008, Kincaid served two-plus seasons as the team’s top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“We’re pleased to name Roger Kincaid as our head softball coach,” said Levick. “He has earned this opportunity after an outstanding job in leading the program to its first CAA title. He is a strong recruiter, and those skills, combined with his abilities to motivate and manage, make him the right person to take GSU softball to even higher levels.”

Before coming to Georgia State, Kincaid spent 12 years coaching high school and travel softball teams in the Atlanta area. He was one of the founders of the Georgia Xtreme Softball Organization, which now consists of six teams, including the Xtreme Mavericks, which Kincaid previously managed.

“I am very grateful to Cheryl Levick, Todd Reeser [Senior Associate AD and softball administrator] and Georgia State University for this opportunity,” said Kincaid. “I’m honored to take over this successful program and coach the outstanding student-athletes here. We have everything in place at Georgia State to continue to challenge for CAA titles and more on a yearly basis.”

A former college football player, Kincaid began coaching youth and high school football before moving to softball to coach his daughter.

The native of Decatur played football at Georgia, where he was a member of the Bulldogs’ 1980 national championship team, learning from coaches such as Vince Dooley, Erk Russell and Bill Lewis. He earned his degree in business management in 1987.

Kincaid takes over a program that graduated just two seniors and returns five all-conference performers.
