Panthers Rout Delaware, Sweep Doubleheader

Softball squad's back-to-back wins surpass best season start in CAA

remains in close pursuit of the CAA summit after upending Delaware in straight games at Bob Heck Field Saturday afternoon.

A windy, sunny day of high-scoring action, culminating in 12-1 and 8-0 victories for the Panthers in the record books. Georgia State (26-17 overall, 10-1 CAA) surpassed its previous best season-starting mark of 8-1 in CAA since joining the conference six years ago.

"I'm very proud of the team because our goal when we started the season was to sweep at home, and we've won every conference series," said State coach Roger Kincaid. "We're right on pace to do that."

State racked up 10 hits and scored in every inning of game one, with Emily Whitaker tallying three runs. Jessica Clifton notched three hits and an RBI in the rout, in which winning pitcher Alana Thompson threw four of five shutout innings and allowed just two hits.

"The bats are on fire," said Thomas. "It's a great feeling for pitchers; it takes a lot of the pressure off us."

In game two, McCall Langford pitched a shutout as the Panthers cruised to another comfortable win. A five-run fifth inning, which State entered with a 3-0 lead, was highlighted by Brenna Morrissey's 3-RBI triple with the bases loaded. The hosts finished with eight hits, compared to three for Delaware.

Georgia State can make it a third series sweep of CAA opposition with a game-three win tomorrow. They're chances look good. The Panthers have won 17 of its last 20 games and nine of the last 11.

"They played awesome: good pitching, good defense, good hitting," said Kincaid. "I'm pleased with the whole performance of the team, very pleased."
