Cobb EMC’s third annual Literacy Week brought prize-winning, local author Gail Karwoski to Timber Ridge Elementary to encourage students’ love of reading, their creativity and to inspire their imaginations.
The program, held November 5-9, brought a total of four children’s book authors to schools across Cobb EMC’s five-county service area. Each challenged students to expand their creativity through writing and to build life-long reading habits. Other guest authors included New York Times bestselling author Brian Lies and Georgia’s own Diane Shore and Robyn Hood Black.
Throughout the week, authors also visited Allatoona Elementary, Baker Elementary, Boston Elementary, Cheatham Hill Elementary, Cornerstone Preparatory Academy, Due West Elementary, Ford Elementary, High Meadows School, Lewis Elementary, Murdock Elementary, North Cobb Christian, Russell Elementary, Russom Elementary and the main branch of the Cobb County Library. Presentations were also made Tuesday at the Tellus Science Center, offering learning opportunities for students who were out of school on Election Day.

To help familiarize students with the featured authors, Cobb EMC donated their books to a number of the schools’ media centers. Authors signed these, along with students’ personal copies, during the event.
Cobb EMC Literacy Week is one of the cooperative’s many commitments to education, including a Partner in Education program, student mentoring and career days, among others.
