🌱 Cobb Board Approves Armed Security + Vote Retains Property Tax Rate

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in East Cobb.

Hi all! Carla Varner here with your fresh copy of the East Cobb Daily, full of all the community news you need to know right now. Without further ado...

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and humid. High: 89 Low: 71.

Here are the top three stories today in East Cobb:

  1. On Thursday the Cobb Board of Education approved a new policy allowing the Cobb County School District to hire armed, non-police professionals for security. Several citizens in the board room chanted "delay the vote!" before the vote on Thursday night. Protests continued after a recess called by Board chairman David Chastain. (East Cobb News)
  2. The Cobb Board of Education voted Thursday night to retain the same property tax rate of 18.9 mills for the Cobb County School District, which has been in place since 2007. The decision came after a debate that included attempts by two board members to reduce, or consider lowering, the number. Board member Jaha Howard made a motion to cut the tax rate to 18.8 mills, but it failed. (East Cobb News)
  3. Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid's town hall this week was dominated by a discussion about affordable housing and a referendum to create the city of Mableton. More than 75 people were in attendance to hear Cupid's plans as head of the commission. Cupid reminded those in attendance that they have a say on the issue of cityhood for Mableton, which will appear on the ballot in November, and that they should never feel like they can't be heard.
