Cobb Board of Education Will Rule on New Wheeler High School Gym, Theatre This Month
If the board approves the SPLOST-funded project, the East Cobb high school will soon have a new 3,000 seat gym and 750 seat auditorium.

The Cobb County Board of Education could approve a $20.7 million construction project at Wheeler High School as soon as this month, the Marietta Daily Journal reports.
On Oct. 23, the school board will meet to discuss and hold a final approval vote on the project, which would see the high school build a new gymnasium and performing arts center. The new facilities would be the capstone of an extensive series of renovations which began in 2012. The original Wheeler High School was built in 1965.
The MDJ reports that the gymnasium is slated to take up 100,000 sq. ft. and have a seating capacity of 3,000. Wheeler’s principal remarked that once the new gym is completed, the school would like to play host to regional basketball tournaments.

A new performing arts center is also in the plans. The 750-seat auditorium would replace the school’s current 350-seat facility and provide students with state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment. The new building would also contain a black box theatre.
