Cobb County High Schools Earn AP Honors Distinctions

The Georgia Department of Education bestowed the distinctions on the schools for high numbers of successful AP Exam takers.

Several Cobb County high schools were recently designated Advanced Placement (AP) Honors Schools by the Georgia Department of Education, the Cobb County School District said Monday.

Which schools made the cut, you may ask?

All of them!

That’s right, each and every high school in Cobb County has been recognized for its efforts to increase accessibility to the challenging AP program. Each school is graded on its number of individual AP classes and each class’ AP test scores and can win recognition for excellence in as many as five categories.

AP Humanities Honors schools must have students who test in at least 1 English Language Arts course, 2 social science courses, 1 fine arts course and 1 world language course. In Cobb County, Allatoona, Campbell, Harrison, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, McEachern, North Cobb, Pebblebrook, Pope, Sprayberry, Walton and Wheeler earned distinction in this category.

Allatoona, Campbell, Harrison, Hillgrove, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, McEachern, North Cobb, Osborne, Pebblebrook, Pope, South Cobb, Sprayberry, Walton and Wheeler won recognition for their AP Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) coursework. Each school’s AP STEM program had at least 2 AP math courses and at least 2 AP science courses.

Allatoona, Kell, Harrison, Hillgrove, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, North Cobb, Pope, Sprayberry, Walton and Wheeler earned further AP STEM Achievement Schools honors for having at least a 40 percent pass rate on AP math and AP science exams.

Cobb County’s AP Merit Schools boast at least 20 percent of the school’s enrollment taking AP exams, with at least half of them receiving a passing grade of 3 or higher. Cobb’s AP Merit Schools were Harrison, Hillgrove, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, North Cobb, Pope, Sprayberry and Walton.

AP Access and Support Schools have at least 30 percent African-American and/or Hispanic participation in AP exams, with at least 30 percent of them receiving the same passing grade of 3 or higher. The county’s AP Access and Support Schools were Campbell, North Cobb and McEachern.

Statewide, some 609 schools were given AP Honors distinction during the 2013-14 school year.
