Cobb County firefighters were able to isolate a Thursday blaze to a single section of an East Cobb condominium complex, but were unable to keep the flames from destroying the building.
According to WSB-TV, a resident of the destroyed unit on Parkaire Crossing said that a downstairs neighbor’s renovations started the fire when a spark jumped from a soldering iron. The fire rapidly spread and soon engulfed the building, which contained eight units.

Firefighters responded quickly to the scene, but told WSB-TV their efforts were hampered by the cold and ice which has persisted in the area for several days; water sprayed on the burning building soon turned to ice, and firefighters needed to put salt on the ground to keep themselves from slipping on other patches of ice.
The American Red Cross is assisting four of the families who have been displaced by the fire, while the other four are staying with nearby family. A friend of one displaced family has established a GoFundMe page to help them rebuild their lives.
