Here are the top three stories in East Cobb today:
- Dozens of Marietta firefighters staged a walk-in of Wednesday's city council meeting to bring attention to what they believe are unfair practices by the fire chief in giving promotions and raises. The firefighters asked city leaders for greater oversight of the department's recent pay scale changes. Retired firefighter Merv McDonald said that the fire chief determines the salary of the firefighters and called the approach highly subjective, inconsistent, and unpredictable. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Members of the Georgia U.S. House delegation and Georgia U.S. Sen Jon Ossoff filed bills in Congress to change the name of the Veterans Administration regional office in nearby Atlanta and name it after the late Sen. Johnny Isakson. U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath said, "I am proud to join with my colleagues to support this bill that salutes his legacy of service to Georgia veterans." U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, a Democrat from the 3rd District, said, "Naming the Veterans Affairs Atlanta regional office after him is a fitting tribute to this proud son of Georgia." (East Cobb News)
- Mt. Bethel Church is officially no longer part of the United Methodist Church, the second-largest Protestant denomination. Mt. Bethel, now an independent church, entered a formal settlement with the North Georgia Conference of United Methodist Church less than a month ago and has fulfilled its consent decree obligations. The Conference Board of Trustees issued a statement Wednesday saying that both parties "recently signed documents that bring resolution to the matter" and that they "appreciate all who have worked patiently and prayerfully to reach this point of resolution."
