McDonald, Guthrie Among Wheeler Sports Inductees

Five Wildcats playing, coaching greats go into school's Athletic Hall of Fame Friday.

The 2011 class of the Wheeler Athletic Hall of Fame, which will be introduced at halftime of Friday night's boys home basketball game against Etowah: 

1. Theresa Gernatt -- A former Wheeler basketball star, she played collegiately at Georgia Tech and coached at Florida State, Mississippi State and Troy, among other schools. She is now the head girls basketball coach at Mt. Paran Christian Academy

2. Ed Guthrie -- A member of Wheeler's state Class AAA runner-up football team in 1973, Guthrie signed a scholarship offer from Penn State and later transferred to the University of Georgia.

3. David McDonald -- The beloved Wheeler baseball coach whose 30-year career ended in 2010 as a result of teacher layoffs in the Cobb school system. 

4. Mike Mills -- A teammate of Guthrie and a star defensive tackle for legendary coach Corky Kell's teams during the mid-1970s

5. Nancy Reitz Turpin -- A standout cross country athlete for Wheeler in the early 1980s.
