🌱 Mr. Bethel Raises $7M For Settlement + New Cobb Circuit Defender

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in East Cobb.

Hello all. It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the East Cobb Daily — back in your inbox with all the most important things happening in our community today.

First, today's weather:

Sunny; breezy in the p.m. High: 89 Low: 63.

Here are the top three stories today in East Cobb:

  1. East Cobb's Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church has raised $7 million through donations, more than half of the $13.1 million needed that will allow it to become independent of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, said Rev. Jody Ray, the lead preacher. The monies raised are a part of the mediated settlement between the church and the Conference. Ray added that the church has also negotiated terms to finance the outstanding balance if needed. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  2. Longtime Metro Atlanta Legal Aid attorney and public defender Scott Halperin was named the new Circuit Defender for Cobb Superior Court. Halperin was chosen unanimously by Cobb Superior judges to serve as the lead defender. Halperin will succeed Randall Harris, who is retiring. (East Cobb News)
  3. Ten East Cobb high school students received appointments to military service academies for the 2022-2023 academic year. The appointments of the 6th District Class of 2026 were announced by U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath. "These talented and driven young people are the future of the United States of America," McBath said in a press release issued by her office. (East Cobb News)
