Power Outages Affect East Cobb Schools on Freezing Morning

The Cobb County School District said that no children were ever exposed to the elements while their schools were without power.

Students at an East Cobb elementary school were shuttled to a nearby high school after a prolonged power outage knocked out the heating systems Thursday morning.

According to a statement posted on the Cobb County School District’s Facebook page, students at Mountain View Elementary School were sent to the Lassiter High School Concert Hall after Georgia Power was unable to restore power to the elementary school before 7 a.m. as originally hoped. Power was finally restored to the school at 2:45 p.m.

Addison Elementary School, Mabry Middle School, and Simpson Middle School also suffered power outages, but power was restored to Addison and Simpson before 7 a.m. and at Mabry by 10 a.m., Cobb County Schools said.

Lindley Sixth Grade Academy also suffered a power loss which caused some students to be sent to the Lindley Middle School campus, the school district announced. Sixth graders who were sent to the main Lindley campus were returned to the academy for dismissal at the end of the school and were transported home as normal. Power was restored at Lindley Sixth Grade Academy by 5 p.m. Thursday.

“At no time were any students exposed to dangerously cold or threatening temperatures or any unsafe conditions,” the school district posted on Facebook.

“It is because of the excellent planning, immediate action and collaborative efforts of the Cobb County School District Transportation Department, Operations Staff and all school personnel at the affected schools that events were managed smoothly and effectively.
