Here are the top three stories in East Cobb today:

  1. After community opposition emerged, the Cobb Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to hold off on rezoning for a new convenience store, gas station, and car wash on Shallowford Road at Trickum Road for a month. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell made the motion and stated that extra time was needed for the applicant, Southern Gas Partners, LLC, to meet with residents regarding runoff, environmental and traffic concerns. The company is applying to change the current neighborhood shopping and general commercial zoning of two parcels of land (3.1 acres), allowing for the conversion of what was previously a gas station to a fueling facility and convenience store. (East Cobb News)
  2. The Cobb County Board of Education is drawing criticism from teacher and gun safety organizations for their recent decision to allow non-police officer employees to carry weapons. The policy allows the district to hire people who are not certified by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council but does not allow teachers or other employees in the classroom to do so. Lisa Morgan, president of the Georgia Association of Educators, said the organization "does not believe that anyone on campus other than properly trained law enforcement should possess weapons." (AXIOS Atlanta)
  3. Come out for Pop Up in the Park Storytime at East Cobb Park today, Jul. 20. The Cobb County Public Library System Bookmobile will be there allowing patrons to check out materials and use a mobile hotspot for Internet service. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. (East Cobb News)
