Here are the top three stories today in East Cobb:
- Over 100 members of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church met last week with Bishop of the North Georgia Conference Sue Haupert-Johnson to discuss claims that the United Methodist Church (UMC) gave in to the legal dispute with the East Cobb congregation, allowing the church to leave the UMC with its property and assets in exchange for $13.1 million. "Our legal counsel was that if we wanted to settle the matter, which we thought was in the best interest of everyone, it would be better to do so before the deposition process began," Haupert-Johnson said at the Friends meeting held at Mt. Zion UMC in East Cobb. The Conference and Mt. Bethel have been in litigation since last September but agreed to a consent decree that is expected to be finalized later this summer. (East Cobb News)
- An Instacart worker, Kay Payton, said that she was assaulted while grocery shopping at the Publix in nearby Smyrna on Sunday. Payton stated that while she was looking down at her phone, the man came up and rubbed up against her body. When she asked him why he was touching her, he shrugged and walked away, said Payton. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Kennesaw City Councilman Doc Eaton attended his last meeting on Monday after resigning because the city renewed the business permit for Wildman's Civil War Surplus in Cobb County, a store that sells racist novelties. The store reopened last week on Main Street downtown under the new permit. During the meeting, Eaton said, "The city issued the new business license, so now the new owner can perpetuate this blight and bigotry on Main Street." (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
