Already in his first term, the school board has been embroiled in several contentious issues, including the switch to the so-called "traditional" that will push back the start of the 2011-12 school year to Aug. 15.

Sweeney campaigned on his support for the traditional calendar, and was in the majority when the school board voted 4-3 in February to make the change.
