Update: Chickens Can Stay at Cobb County Home

In a 3-2 vote, the Cobb County Commission approves a measure to allow family to keep a backyard coop.

EAST COBB, GA — A local family won permission Tuesday from Cobb County leaders to raise chickens in the backyard of their single-family home, according to a media report.

Christina and Michael C. Disser converted a children's playhouse in the back of their house on Mitchell Road into a coop that houses four chickens and four ducks. In pursuing an organic lifestyle, they're raising the birds to provide farm-fresh eggs.

But in March, Cobb County officials told the family that they had to get a temporary land use permit to keep the chickens and ducks at a residence of less than 2 acres, WSB-TV Channel 2 reported.

In a 3-2 vote on Tuesday, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners granted the Dissers a one-year land use permit for their four hens, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. But the family will need to seek a county variance for their four ducks.

Previously, several county officials had expressed concern about the impact the chickens and ducks could have on nearby property values, WSB-TV reported.
