Wheeler Teacher Seeking Recount

John Miller finished three votes behind incumbent Smyrna city council member Melleny Pritchett in Tuesday's elections.

It was an easy victory Tuesday night for  and for Jonquil City voters who want the opportunity to buy packaged alcohol in stores on Sundays.

For teacher and coach , the results were much more suspenseful. 

Miller, making his first run for public office, received 204 votes in the Ward 1 race, three votes behind incumbent , who garnered 207 votes.

According to Georgia state law, a second-place finisher can request a recount if there is a difference of less than percent behind the leader. Miller has indicated he will be requesting a recount, which must be made within two days of the certification of election results. 

On a Tuesday featuring gorgeous weather, 5,501 of the Smyrna’s 26,223 registered voters (21 percent) went to the polls to vote for mayor and all seven council seats. Smyrna-Vinings Patch provided daylong coverage of Election Day which you can see here.

Voters were in favor by a 76-24 percent margin, to allow Sunday alcohol sales beginning Jan. 1, 2012.

Bacon, too, rolled as he had 75 percent of the votes to easily turn back challengers  (17 percent) and  (7 percent).

"I'm very humble,’’ Bacon said at his victory party Tuesday night at . “I grew up here....I'll never forget where I come from and the people I represent."

About 300 people attended the celebration, including Smyrna citizen Kathy Fouts: "He's an excellent guy...He's done a wonderful job for the city of Smyrna," she said.

And while Councilmembers , Ward 3, and , Ward 6, as well as newcomer , Ward 2, were unopposed and won handily, the other four council races were far closer.

In Ward 4, Councilman Mike McNabb just missed avoiding a runoff as he garnered 48.57 percent of the vote. But he’ll have to face Charles “Corkey” Welch, who got 32 percent of the vote. They were followed by Judith Causey Jones (14 percent) and Alex Bretch (5 percent).

In Ward 5,  (40 percent) will face Susan Dease Wilkinson (39 percent) in next month’s runoff. Mike Hyde finished with 20 percent of the votes.

And in Ward 7, Ron Fennel (39 percent) will face Garry Osborne (21.43 percent), who finished just ahead of Vic Yankouski (21.04 percent) and Ziad Salameh (17.99 percent). Osborne garnered 380 votes to Yankouski’s 373.
