1. UPDATE: Monroe County school board approves tentative 14.999 millage rate, public hearings set (41nbc.com) — Forsyth-area homeowners should know the Monroe County school board has tentatively set a 14.999 millage rate for FY 2027, which could lower taxes on a $350,000 home by about $164. The rate is still above the rollback level, and residents can weigh in at public hearings on September 3 and 10 before the final vote.
2. Restaurant Report Card: Middle Georgia food service inspection scores August 10-14 (41nbc.com) — Recent health inspections show Taco Bell on North Lee Street in Forsyth earned a perfect 100, while the Hampton Inn on Frontage Road scored a strong 97. The broader report also lists dozens of restaurant and food-service scores across Middle Georgia counties for inspections conducted August 10–14.
3. JUST THE WAY IT IS: Learn Monroe County history at depot (mymcr.net) — You can explore Monroe County's past at the Depot, including rare Sanborn fire insurance maps of Forsyth from 1890 and 1920 that reveal how local streets and buildings have changed. Exhibits also highlight Native American history, early farming tools, home and medical artifacts, and stories of local schools and notable Monroe County figures.
4. New Deputy Warden of Administration at Johnson State Prison • The Georgia Virtue (thegeorgiavirtue.com) — A Georgia Department of Corrections announcement out of Forsyth names Matthew Newkirk the new Deputy Warden of Administration at Johnson State Prison, effective August 16. Newkirk, who advanced quickly through accounting roles at Macon State Prison, will now oversee the prison's business office, property and supply operations, and food service departments.
