A Day In The Life Of……

By: Kenneth Stepp

We are all dreamers. Compares too. We see someone that smiles all the time, seems to have their life together, drives a nice car, lives in a beautiful home. You know the type. We automatically think, “it must be nice”. I’ve caught myself doing it. You have too. We all do it. We project our situation onto their life. Boom! Our life would be perfect then. Of course, that’s nonsense. Happiness is never in situations, nor is contentment. It’s in our mind.

Transitioning from one lifestyle to another has it’s perks. If you go from a hand to mouth existence to riding across a lake on a jetski. There will be good times. Eventually real life sets in. You work, pay bills, worry about this and that. Very much like you did before. I use to be great at elevating my lifestyle every few years. I remember stating I was broke. My friend in the room lives a very meager life. Many months can’t pay his bills at all. When he looked at me, I said, “it;s a different kind of broke”. You see, I had to raise $200k that week to meet my bills. It’s a different mindset. Recently, Bill & Hillary Clinton stated they were broke. With a $50 million net worth, it must be like I meant. Just higher up the food chain.

Envy is an interesting phenomenon. JFK, in a speech just before he was killed, said, “there are those that want the world through covetous means”. I personally know what he was talking about. Many do not. For you youngsters. JFK stands for John F Kennedy. He was the president way back in the early 1960’s. Camelot was the big story back then. I promise. Many wanted to be them.

The ;ottery….. Ever daydream about winning it? I have. Yet I seldom play it. I wonder why that is? Wealth is a ton of fun for a little while. Then, it’s back to the mundane. I’ve been wealthy twice by my own definition. Having $1 million in the bank, not owed to anyone. It may not be some people’s definition of wealthy. But, it works for me. Wealth is relative and subjective.

“Thou shalt not covet”. I think God has a firm grip on the human condition. To not include that one would be denying one of the most important things we are to try and control. I do not believe we can live a covet free life. We can only control how we respond to it. Some, better than others. We all do something when it happens. The worst are the ones that resent someone because they have more than them.

“Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. ”― Carrie Fisher

I believe this to be true. Of course if you resent one, you wind up resenting many. I have known people like this. They are bitter and talk bad about everyone in their paths. They are truly pathetic. I wish there was a way to hold a mirror in front of them every time they went on a bitter rant about someone else. Maybe they would change their way. Maybe ir would just improve the way they rant….
