📰 News we're reading

1. Gwinnett town hall will cover flock cameras, immigration policy, data centers (thegeorgiasun.com) — Gwinnett County residents can speak directly with Commissioner Kirkland Carden tonight about license plate reader cameras, immigration enforcement policies, and how data centers are approved, at the Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. From 6 to 8 p.m., police and planning officials will answer questions in person and via a live Facebook stream, giving you a rare chance to press leaders on surveillance and development in your neighborhood.

2. Gwinnett targets blighted commercial properties with tax penalty (fox5atlanta.com) — Gwinnett County has approved a new blight tax that can multiply the general fund millage rate by seven for unsafe or neglected commercial properties, then reward cleaned-up sites with a three‑year tax discount. Inspectors will focus on repeatedly problematic locations, and owners can appeal blight designations, but officials haven't yet said how many properties qualify or how fast owners must respond.

3. 1 man dead, 2 injured in shooting during armed robbery in Gwinnett County, police say (cbsnews.com) — A weekend armed robbery in Gwinnett County near Laurel Crossing in Buford left a 23-year-old Atlanta man dead and two others wounded, including the alleged accomplice now charged with felony murder and other offenses. Police say the surviving victim is recovering in the hospital, believe the shooting was an isolated incident, and are asking anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.

4. Car theft ring hit 25 vehicles with hacked key tool, warrants say (wsbtv.com) — Gwinnett County police say two men used a handheld key-programming device to steal at least 25 Infiniti and Nissan Maxima vehicles from apartment complexes across Lawrenceville, Norcross, Snellville, Lilburn, and Duluth this summer. Both suspects are in custody, and a local locksmith is urging residents to consider steering wheel locks, hidden kill switches, and RFID-blocking boxes to better protect their cars.

5. 50 Depositions and No Video: $23.6M Gwinnett Case Built on Circumstantial Evidence (law.com subscription) — A Gwinnett County State Court jury has awarded $23.6 million in a wrongful-death case involving a nursing home patient who tested positive for medications he hadn't been prescribed. While full details require a subscription, the verdict underscores how local juries are responding to alleged medical and elder-care failures in Georgia courts.
