Connect - It’s That Time of Year, That Time of Life

As seniors, we clearly understand that connecting is both a medical and emotional booster shot.

Human connection, when done properly, is an addictive stimulant and pain reliever. From the moment of birth, we demand the presence and touch of our caregiver. Our brains are wired for survival, and social connection is primal. As we mature, we quickly find out it is almost impossible to score a touchdown or build a rocket ship by ourselves. Even those of us with the best intellectual skills and productive thoughts cannot apply them without the social skills of a leader who knows the value of connecting with teammates.

As seniors, we clearly understand that connecting is both a medical and emotional booster shot. Whether listening, speaking, singing, dancing, sharing a photo image or publishing an article, these are our tools for finding ways to connect with folks--and we all find ourselves better off for connecting. We are refreshed, rejuvenated, and encouraged by the moment, and often make plans to seek each other out another time soon.

We Boomers and seniors must continue, continue, continue to “reach out and touch someone!” Our lives are more fulfilled, goals attained, and sense of value refreshed when we communicate, interact, socialize, and encourage others.

This is the time of year when cultures around the world and members of our own family are instilled with warm feelings of thankfulness, connection and hope. End of year celebrations of harvest, productivity, friends and family start with fought over drum sticks, religious and commercial ceremony, ending with sky lit pyro-techniques (and that’s just for breakfast).

From holiday lights, to social gatherings, to holiday dances and Christmas plays, all this social activity is sensed and heightened with social connection. (After all, how can you have a lively food fight without a willing adversary?) A year from now we may not remember what exactly took place at last year’s events , but we will remember how we feel about someone who was there.
