Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said police responded to a 911 call around 2:15 p.m.
The preliminary investigation revealed the incident started as a domestic dispute in the dining room of the home between the dead woman, her mother and her apparent husband. Police did not immediately know if the two were legally married.
The dispute spilled outside into the street in front of at least one witness, who shot at the suspect as he was fleeing the scene. Police said the man left the scene in an unknown vehicle.
Police have not identified either victim, or the suspect. The condition of the mother was not known.
Pihera said two young children were in the home when the attacks occurred. They have been released to the custody of a family member.
