GA-PCOM Celebrates National Osteopathic Medicine Week
National Osteopathic Medicine Week brings daily campus events to help shed light on the importance of osteopathic physicians and medicine.

(SUWANEE, GA – April 17, 2015) Georgia Campus - Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (GA-PCOM) is joining the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and other professional healthcare institutions in celebrating National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week April 19 – 25.
Student leaders at GA-PCOM have prepared an array of activities including an Alumni Panel featuring J. Steven Blake, DO, and Amanda Fischer Reeves, DO speaking about “Osteopathic Practice: Then and Now.” In addition, osteopathic medical students will host ShaDO day where prospective students can shadow a DO for the day. Next Saturday, students will participate in community service activities including the Trot to Clot Walk and Run at Stone Mountain Park benefiting Hemophilia of Georgia, an MS Walk at Piedmont Park supporting the Georgia Chapter of the National MS Society, and a March for Babies at Suwanee Town Center benefiting the March of Dimes.

Currently there are more than 104,000 DOs and osteopathic medical students in the US and 1,650 osteopathic physicians in Georgia. Governor Nathan Deal recently signed a proclamation proclaiming April 19 – 25 Osteopathic Medicine Week in Georgia.
NOM Week seeks to bring the osteopathic medical profession together to focus on increasing awareness of osteopathic medicine and DOs in communities nationwide. Osteopathic physicians are fully licensed to prescribe medication and practice in all specialty area, including family practice, surgery and radiology. DOs are trained to consider the health of the whole person and use their hands to help diagnose and treat their patients. They focus on preventive health care by teaching their patients to develop attitudes and lifestyles that don’t just fight illness, but also help to prevent it.
