Gwinnett County's GPCA Raises One Million Dollars for LLS

After ten years of fund-raising, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced today that the Georgia Pest Control Association reached the milestone of $ 1 million raised by its members to help find a cure for leukemia and other blood cancers.  “It has been an amazing ten years of co-ordinated and individual efforts to work with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and achieve this level of success,” said Valera Jessee, Executive Director for Georgia Pest Control Association.

Jessee continued, “Our members are all community-minded companies and have worked to be a partner with charities and fund-raising groups throughout Georgia.”  In 2003, GPCA decided to funnel this energy into one primary effort, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Annual Light The Night Walk, to represent the industry’s commitment to helping others.

Light The Night is a nationwide evening fundraising walk to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. During the event, walkers carry illuminated balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer -- and form a community of caring, bringing light to the dark world of cancer.

2013 marked the fifteenth annual Light The Night Walk in Atlanta, which was held on Saturday, October 12th at Centennial Olympic Park.  Almost 10,000 walkers participated, raising nearly $1.3 million.  Combined with other walks throughout the state, Light The Night raised over $2 million in Georgia last year.  The funds will be used to fund lifesaving blood cancer research, free educational materials for patients and families, local family and patient support programs and comprehensive, personalized assistance through LLS’s Information Resource Center.
