Gwinnett Suspects Among Those Arrested for Credit Card Fraud in Idaho

In all, 12 from metro Atlanta were arrested in a scheme, which police say may be connected to recent security breaches.

Twelve metro Atlantans, mostly from Gwinnett County, were arrested and charged with using stolen credit card numbers in Idaho.

Boise Police said in a news release it also found evidence that the accounts used by the suspects are “tied to one or more of the security breeches recently reported by several large corporations.”

The group is accused of using the credit card numbers to purchase gift cards from Boise-area stores. Police said the group travelled from Georgia to Idaho specifically to commit the crimes, then planned to sell the gift cards and pocket the cash.

Police were alerted on Oct. 5 about people trying to buy high-value gift cards at several stores. Witnesses gave police a description of the two vehicles used; both were rentals and were found at a motel.

On Oct. 6, several more attempts to buy gift cards were made, and police zeroed in on the suspects. Another group was taken into custody at the Boise airport, and others were nabbed near the motel.

Some of the purchases did not go through, but police say the group was able to buy $15,000 in gift cards before being caught.

Police did not elaborate on the connection with recent security breaches.

“Exactly how the suspects obtained the stolen account information is still under investigation,” police in the news release.
