Some Damage From Storms, But Get Ready for Colder Temps

The weather got pretty exciting Monday afternoon, with even a Tornado Warning issued at one point in Gwinnett County.

The strong cold front that brought severe weather with it into metro Atlanta will give way to some decidedly colder temperatures the rest of the week.

According to the National Weather Service, lows will be fall to near the freezing point Wednesday night. Low temperatures will be from the high 30s to low 40s Thursday through the weekend.

Monday's storms intensified to severe strength as they approached the area, prompting a Tornado Warning until 6:30 p.m. for northwestern portions of Gwinnett County.

The storms weakened by the time they got here, although there were some reports of hail in Suwanee and damage elsewhere.

Power lines were reported down in Snellville, and a house fire in Buford was believed to be caused by lightning. No one was injured in that fire.

Gwinnett Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said residents should be prepared when spring storms turn severe.

"Now is the time of year to begin planning for severe weather," Rutledge said in an emailed media release. "Know what to do when you suspect a lightning strike: Check the attic and basement for signs of smoke or heat. Be ready to evacuate quickly and call 9-1-1 if you encounter smoke or flames."
