PCOM School of Pharmacy Announces Pharmacy Residents in Partnership with Gwinnett Medical Center

Kacie L. Speed and Priyam K. Mithawala were selected for the new Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Residency program partnership.

(SUWANEE, GA – April 9, 2015) The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) School of Pharmacy in Suwanee, Georgia, welcomes two residents for the inaugural Post-Graduate Year 1 residency program that will operate in partnership with Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Kacie L. Speed, a 2015 PharmD candidate from the PCOM School of Pharmacy, and Priyam K. Mithawala, PharmD, a 2012 Doctor of Pharmacy graduate from Ohio State University, were selected for the newly established residency program.

The College’s 12-month program is set to begin on July 1, 2015, and will prepare Speed and Mithawala to be clinical pharmacists with the ability to practice in a variety of patient care clinical settings. This opportunity is available to pharmacy graduates who would like to pursue further training at medical teaching institutions. They will have the opportunity to educate other healthcare professionals, patients and students and will be awarded a teaching certificate upon completion of the program. As a new program, the pharmacy residency will transition to candidate status in July 2015 and is seeking full accreditation from the American Society of Health System-Pharmacists (ASHP) in July 2016.

Speed, PharmD’15, of Newnan, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia and has held several leadership positions at the PCOM School of Pharmacy including student representative for the Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists, president of the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and treasurer of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists, GA-PCOM chapter.

She is excited about the launch of the new program and plans to eventually pursue a second-year residency specializing in ambulatory care and practice as a board certified ambulatory care clinical pharmacist.

Dr. Mithawala, of Roswell, earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore, India, and is a registered pharmacist in both Ohio and Georgia where she currently works as a pharmacist at Select Medical Hospital in Macon, Georgia. She holds current professional affiliations with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, the International Pharmaceutical Federation, and the Ohio Pharmacist Association.
