State of Georgia vs. Gold E. Locks

School uses creative experience in teaching 4th graders about the judicial system. Gwinnett County Justice Center/ Judge Randy Rich

How do you approach teaching the complexities of the US Judicial System to 9 year olds? Drawing inspiration from a well-known fairy tale, a unique tradition emerged.

Annually Greater Atlanta Christian fourth grade students eagerly await the courtroom drama of the State of Georgia vs Gold E. Locks. This year was no exception as little Miss Locks was accused of breaking and entering the home of Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear, aka The Three Bears.

Witnesses passionately testified for both the defense and the prosecution, trying to prove either Miss Lock’s innocence or her guilt before a jury of her peers. The Honorable Judge Randy Rich presided over the trial, which took place on March 2, 3, and 4 at the Gwinnet County Justice Center. All fourth grade students participated in the trial; some as witnesses, some as attorneys, some as jurors, and a few students protected the court and its proceedings as members of the Gwinnett County sheriff’s office.
