Confirms Rabies in Skunk (921wlhr.com) — Franklin County health officials have confirmed a rabid skunk near Stone Bridge Road and Highway 145 and urge anyone with possible contact to call the Health Department immediately. To help protect pets, the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter will hold a low-cost rabies clinic October 24 on Beaver Creek Road in Lavonia, with Lavonia Animal Hospital stressing how quickly rabies becomes fatal without vaccination.
• Lavonia Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash Monday (921wlhr.com) — A 78-year-old Lavonia resident, Freddie Swain Looney, died Monday after his SUV left Lankford Road in Hart County, struck a tree, and he was partially ejected. Authorities say he was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital, and no driver impairment is suspected, underscoring safety concerns for Lavonia-area drivers on that roadway.
