'Amputations Appear to be Healing' for Gwinnett Mom Battling Flesh-Eating Bacteria

Cindy Martinez, who had several amputations last month due to the bacteria, has been transferred to an Augusta hospital, her husband said.

Cindy Martinez, the Gwinnett County mother of two who endured several amputations last month due to a flesh-eating bacteria, is continuing her recovery at a hospital in Augusta, her husband said Friday in a brief update on her condition.

“All the amputations appear to be healing, but she is still being monitored closely,” David Martinez wrote on Facebook. He said his wife is in the ICU unit at the Augusta hospital, her third hospital.

On June 25, after already enduring several operations, doctors amputated parts of her legs, an arm and fingers of the remaining hand.

In the Facebook update, David Martinez said both of Cindy’s legs were removed below the knees, her right arm above the elbow and all of the fingers on her left hand below or at the last joint.

“The next step for Cindy would be a rehabilitation center to learn basic movements and functions,” David Martinez wrote.

“Cindy and I thank everyone for your prayers and continued support through this journey. Seeing many people come together has allowed Cindy, our two children, and I to manage our lives a little better and focus on each other. Cindy is ready to come home, but has more recovery ahead of her. The kids pray for mom to come home. As for me, I know everything is in God’s hands and I pray that HE continues to guide me in the right direction.” -- David Martinez
