📰 News we're reading

1. Georgia election officials ask Supreme Court to delay proposed mail-ballot rules (13wmaz.com) — Macon-Bibb County election officials are preparing to mail thousands of absentee ballots starting October 5 while closely watching a Supreme Court fight over proposed federal mail-ballot rules. Local supervisor Thomas Gillon says his office will keep following Georgia's current procedures, coordinate with state guidance, and ensure each voter receives the correct ballot before the October 23 request deadline.

2. Macon-Bibb commissioners keep millage rate unchanged (wpganews.com) — Macon-Bibb commissioners have voted to keep the county millage rate at 9.575, meaning your property tax bill should stay the same as last year. Supporters say the rate is needed to fund public safety, beautification, and IT, while opponents argue the county should better manage dollars instead of maintaining a rate above the rollback level.

3. Furman To Kick Off SoCon Season Saturday At Mercer (furmanpaladins.com) — Furman opens its Southern Conference schedule Saturday night against defending champion Mercer at Five Star Stadium in Macon, giving local fans another big college football matchup in town. Mercer enters 2-0 after dominant early wins, while Furman looks to rebound from a loss to Tennessee behind an improving offense and a defense led by standout pass rushers.

4. Macon man sentenced to 40 years in fatal shooting, robbery (41nbc.com) — A Macon man has been sentenced to 40 years, with 20 to serve, after pleading guilty in the 2023 shooting death of a neighbor during a dispute on Brookhaven Road. He's banned from the Macon Judicial Circuit, including I-75 through the area, and faces strict conditions on weapons, alcohol, and contact with the victim's family.

5. Georgia Power battery storage facility to boost Middle Georgia power reliability (41nbc.com) — A new 128-megawatt Georgia Power battery storage facility near Robins Air Force Base, announced from Macon, is now online to help stabilize electricity across Middle Georgia during high demand. The system stores excess solar power and can quickly feed it back into the grid, aiming to improve reliability for nearby communities even though it won't directly lower bills.
