📰 News we're reading

1. One dead after fire destroys shed used as makeshift home in west Macon (dailydispatch.com) — A deadly overnight fire in a west Macon shed used as a makeshift home left one person dead near Wilson Road and Barbara Drive, according to Bibb County officials. Macon-Bibb code enforcement says the property has burned multiple times before and had been shelter for several people experiencing homelessness, raising ongoing safety and housing concerns for the neighborhood.

2. UPDATE: Second Macon 7 Brew gets zoning approval for Zebulon Road (41nbc.com) — Macon-Bibb's Planning and Zoning Commission has approved rezoning and conditional use for a second 7 Brew Coffee on Zebulon Road, clearing a key hurdle for the drive-through shop. The project still needs multiple agency approvals, but plans call for traffic improvements, stormwater controls, and a wooded buffer near nearby homes, adding another coffee option alongside existing Zebulon businesses.

3. Macon students react to claims from former AI employee that it could 'kill us all' (13wmaz.com) — Macon college students and a Middle Georgia State University professor are weighing in on alarming claims from a former AI employee that advanced systems could threaten humanity. They argue people rely too heavily on AI, call for strict limits and layered cybersecurity protections, and stress that developers and users in places like Macon still control how the technology evolves.

4. As Macon Pride approaches, meet one of Bibb County's longtime LGBTQ+ advocates (macon.com) — Macon residents can look ahead to a full slate of Pride Week events later this month, from pickleball and parties to a downtown festival and interfaith picnic. The story spotlights longtime Macon LGBTQ+ advocate Jane Darby, her decades of activism, and how her work helped shape today's more visible, organized Pride celebrations across the city.
