MARIETTA, GA — A crash involving a stopped tractor-trailer killed a Marietta man early Friday morning on I-75 south, Cobb County Police said.
The deadly crash happened around 1 a.m. on the I-75 southbound bridge over North Marietta Parkway, police said.
Hours prior to the crash, police another accident had taken place that had the lanes shut down.
The earlier accident caused a pause in traffic, which included a tractor-trailer driven by a 29-year-old Florida resident, police said.
Though traffic eventually began moving, police the tractor-trailer stayed stationary on the bridge for an unknown reason.
A second tractor-trailer being driven by a 35-year-old Florida man in the same lane as the stopped truck swerved to miss it, grazing the stopped truck on its left side, police said.
Then, a white Volkswagen approached the bridge and drove into the back of the stopped tractor-trailer, police said. The driver, 47-year-old Gordon Fields, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Both truck drivers stayed on the scene and cooperated, police said. No charges had been filed as of late Friday morning, police said.
