MARIETTA, GA — Authorities have identified the man killed in a police shooting Friday night near the intersection of Windy Hill Road and Osborne Court.
The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. during a traffic stop, Cobb County Police said.
Gregory Hill, Jr., 43, of Austell, died in the shooting, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Officers attempted to stop Hill's Cadillac SUV as it was being driven recklessly on Windy Hill, police said.
Hill then fled and crashed near Windy Hill and Osborne, the GBI said. According to police, Hill lost control and overturned the SUV near a home.
Hill refused to exit the vehicle and was armed with a gun, police said.
As officers were approaching his SUV, the GBI said Hill shot at the officers.
Officers returned fired and backed away from the vehicle, the GBI said. The SWAT team was then activated as Hill barricaded himself in the vehicle, the GBI said.
For about an hour and a half, the GBI said officers tried to negotiate with Hill until he displayed a gun.
Hill attempted to get out of the SUV while brandishing the gun, police said.
An officer then shot toward Hill, hitting him at least one time, the GBI said. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities added.
His body was taken to the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, authorities said.
No officers were injured in the shooting, authorities said.
Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
