MARIETTA, GA — An internal review is underway after an inmate at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center died Sunday, authorities said Monday.

Deputies found Robert Hardy, 64, suffering from cardiac arrest Saturday at the local jail, according to the Cobb County Sheriff's Office.

Medical staff rendered aid, and Hardy was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, authorities said.

Though he was placed on a ventilator, authorities said "Hardy did not have a viable path to recovery," and "his family made the difficult decision to end his care." He died Sunday.

Hardy had been incarcerated since June 11 on charges of first-degree arson, driving over a fire hose, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license, authorities said.

"As is customary for any in-custody death, the sheriff's office is conducting an internal review to confirm that all protocols were followed," authorities said in a news release.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner will determine an official cause of death.
