SURVIVOR
The definition of a survivor is
“a person or thing that carries on despite hardships or trauma”.
This body of work was conceived by Atlanta Photographer - Laurie Edward Matthews, originally as a concept piece
to explore the human body of color against a stark white background with a white textured substance (powder) as its energy in motion.
You could say that serendipity brought Laurie Edward and his model Corey Allen, together. Corey’s ability to tell a story with his body and the powder took a life of its own during the photo shoot; as if they had danced this dance together before. The lighting, concept, seamless contrast of the body, and the energy of the powder tell a beautiful story that was only realized after the photo shoot was
complete.

Corey had his own struggle in life with a powder stronger than he could have ever imagined – Cocaine! It was because of his struggles that he immediately identified with the story that these photographs could tell. Also, Laurie Edward and Corey realized how these images could inspire others to release themselves from their own demons, and become victorious in the World of Life that we live in.
”I have always loved the art of photography and have created many different photo shoots,” says Laurie Edward.
“But I have never gotten emotional over a photo shoot until I did this series. I knew immediately that this was a special collection that had to be shared.”

Corey has been an inspiration to many with his story of triumph over drugs; and this body of work is a reflection of that beginning turmoil, to his ultimate survival and reflection of his past, his present, and his glorious future.
“Survivor” as a body of art is dedicated to all of those who are struggling, and those who have Survived any hardships or trauma in this beautiful life!
This show is also a benefit for P.A.L.S. (Pets Are Loving
Support). The nonprofit agency has been helping people living with HIV/AIDS and other critically illnesses, as well as senior citizens keep their pets by covering the cost of food, vet visits and medications since 1990. Recently the
organization learned it would not be receiving a $30,000 grant that it has received for several years. Due to this recent development, P.A.L.S. is facing a huge financial crisis and needs our help.
“I am so glad that I could include P.A.L.S. into my SURVIVOR show,” says Laurie Edward. “This organization
had done so much for our community for so long and I am glad to do anything to help support them.”
Bubba Dee and P.A.L.S executive director Kevin Bryant will be in attendance at the event to collect donations and provide information about the organization.
“SURVIVOR” will be hosted by 10th & Piedmont located at 991 Piedmont Ave, Atlanta, GA 30309 on January 19, 2013 from 2-5:00 PM. RSVP’s are requested at info@laurieedward.com.

Laurie Edward was born and raised in a small
town in Upstate, South Carolina. He has always had an artistic love for the art of photography, especially the male physique.
His work is often bold, sensual and provocative, but created to signify the beauty of the male physique. His clean, unflinching style challenges viewers to confront the beauty of the human being and its need for self expression.
Although his work often deals with the sensitive subject of the nude male, its pristine quality enables his photography to bridge the gap between provocative subject matter and artistic respectability.
Laurie Edward’s work is often featured in Atlanta’s David Magazine, DNA Magazine Australia, and was published in VOGUE 2012 September Fall Fashion Issue.
