The Atlanta Humane Society has received a check for $25,000 from pet care giant Purina as part of their continuing partnership with the facility,
According to Humane Society Vice President of Development and Communications Joy Hallinan, the Dec. 23 donation from Purina’s Fairburn plant was one of many the society has received during its decades-long partnership with Purina; Hallinan said that they are one of ten shelters in the country which gets all its pet food from Purina as an in-kind contribution.

Hallinan said that the donation will be used to upgrade the facilities at the Howell Mill shelter. Plans call for the installation of adjustable lighting to help dogs sleep better at night, sound machines to provide calming ambient noise inside the dog shelter, and improving equipment such as kennel doors and soundproofing.
“It’s about creating a good, enriching environment for the dogs,” Hallinan said.

The project to improve the dog shelter is part of the shelter’s yearly capital improvement schedule, said Hallinan.
Although Purina’s big donation is the one snagging the headlines, Hallinan stressed that any contribution of food, dog toys, used towels, or dog treats, no matter how large or how small, is a huge help for the shelter.
