Atlanta, Midtown Crime Figures Down From 2013

Crimes in Atlanta also dropped seven percent between the last two weekly reporting periods for which data are available.

The Atlanta Police Department has responded to 19,815 crimes so far in 2014, which is an eight percent drop from the same time period in 2013 and a nine percent drop from 2012’s levels.

In the first 35 weeks of 2013, the department responded to 21,613, official figures report. During the first 35 weeks of 2012, 21,889 crimes were reported.

The overall decrease in crime is mirrored on the smaller scale, as well; between Week 34 (Aug. 17 - 23) and Week 35 (Aug. 24- 30), police saw a 7.73 percent drop in reports of crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and auto theft.

Police have also recovered two percent more stolen cars during the first 35 weeks of 2014 as opposed to the first 35 weeks of 2013. The numbers show a 12 percent increase from the 2012 totals through week 35.

The department has also made four percent fewer arrests in 2014, with totals decreasing from 29,470 to 28,405.

The news is not all good, however; Atlanta police have reported a two percent increase in murders and a 35 percent increase in rapes from the same reporting period of 2013.

In Midtown’s Zone Five, the total number of crimes has decreased two percent from 2013’s numbers. Between Weeks 34 and 35 of 2014, the crime rate decreased a total of 28.8 percent. However, the zone saw 33 percent more murders, 275 percent more rapes, five percent more robberies, and seven percent more auto thefts compared to the first 35 weeks of 2013. Arrests are down eight percent in Buckhead so far this year.
