US News & World Report analyzed the 100 most populous U.S. cities to find the best places to live.

Atlanta is No. 61 on a list of the nation's best places to live.

Denver, CO, was No. 1 on the US News & World Report list. Dead last on the list was San Juan, PR. In the lower 48, No. 99 was Modesto, CA.

The publication analyzed the nation's 100 most populous cities to find the best places to live, using the metrics of good home value; desirability; the strength of the local job market; and a high quality of life.

Atlanta had an overall score of 6.4 out of a possible 10. It scored a 6.2 on the desirability scale; a 7.1 in value; a 6.5 on job market; a 5.8 on quality of life; and a 7.0 on migration.

Some of the negatives contributing to Atlanta's ranking: a commute time that is 4.9 minutes longer than the national average; students that are less college-ready upon graduation than other similarly sized cities; and a crime rate that is above the national average.

Many of the pluses on Atlanta's side: a higher home value than other similar cities; a terrific climate; and an overall sense of Southern hospitality, leading many transplants to say, "I'm not used to people holding the door open for me."
