Atlanta Police to Host Discussion With Transgender Residents Thursday

The department wants to outline its new policies regarding transgender residents, but also wants to ensure open lines of communication.

The Atlanta Police Department has announced a community meeting targeted towards the city’s transgender community which will highlight new police procedures regarding transgender residents and will serve as the springboard for an active, constant dialogue between the department and the community.

A City of Atlanta release says that the meeting will be held on Thursday between 7 and 8:30 p.m. at The Rush Center on DeKalb Avenue. Police representatives expected to attend the meeting include the department’s two LGBT Liaisons and commanders who oversee the departments standard operating procedures.

Police will reinforce the importance of the Liaisons, but will also seek a dialogue with the transgender community on ways the two sides can better communicate with one another. Commanders will also explain the department’s new policies towards interactions with transgender, intersex, and gender nonconforming residents.
