Atlanta Sculptor Explores Recent National and International Events That Impacted America Between 2011 and 2014

The exhibition begins on Aug. 16.

Atlanta artist-blacksmith Jeffry Loy presents “Loss and Resilience,” a new body of work featuring 22 sculptures and installations that focus on national and international events that impacted contemporary American ideology and social landscape from 2011 through June 2014. Each individual artwork explores headline-making events, including the US housing crisis, the Occupy movement, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the federal government shutdown, and the loss of direction and credibility of America in local and international affairs.

Loy describes the series as “a depiction of events, both sudden and incremental, that have changed the external perception of America on the international stage and internally impacted American society.” Using the American flag as a cornerstone of each artwork, the viewer is invited to self-reflect on the questions “What is the meaning of the cloth that binds us? What does it mean to be an American? and “How will we embrace change as a nation in the future through the events from our past?”

Each sculptural work incorporates the American flag, with custom flagpoles, hand-forged steel, rope, wood and concrete elements. The scale of the individual artworks varies from life-size to large-scale installations.
