Atlanta Wants to Host Soccer Tournament Semifinals

The penultimate matches of the 2015 Gold Cup could be held in the Georgia Dome.

After serving as the host city for the quarterfinals of the 2013 Gold Cup, Atlanta wants to play host to the semifinals of the 2015 tournament, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Gold Cup, which is the continental championship tournament for soccer teams in the Americas, will be held again in 2015. Twelve teams from across North, Central, and South America will participate in the 2015 tournament. The United States, Mexico, and Canada have qualified for 2015. The United States won its fifth Gold Cup at the end of the 2013 tournament.

If the city’s bid is approved, the Georgia Dome will serve as the stadium for the two semi-final games, which would come near the end of the tournament. The tournament is expected to run from July 7-26, 2015, and feature matches in ten different cities.
