Atlanta's Fed to Remain Open During Shutdown

No employees at Fed to be furloughed, but MLK site, Carter Library would close.

UPDATE: Around 11 p.m. Friday night, it was reported the federal government reached an agreement on the budget, and the government will not shutdown at this time.

Midtown’s most recognizable federal agency – the – would not be affected by the looming government shutdown.

The bank – like all branches of the Federal Reserve System – does not rely on congressional appropriations to keep it up and running. No employees there would be furloughed.

In another shutdown-related item, U.S. Rep. John Lewis’ office will remain open during a shutdown. And regular mail delivery will continue as usual.

However, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Carter Library would close and many employees at the Centers for Disease Control would be furloughed as the agency scaled back to focus on emergency operations.

And the Food & Drug Administration - with offices in Midtown - may also furlough employees. CNN Money has reported that the only department that would remain at full capacity is the tobacco-regulation department, which is funded in full by the tobacco industry.
