Marietta Square

A free, three-day outdoor arts festival on the historic Marietta Square featuring a juried market of 200 artists, live music, chalk art, a collaborative mural and family-friendly activities.Marietta Art in the Park celebrates its 40th year on the historic Marietta Square over Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
The festival features a juried Artist Market with 200 fine artists from across the country showcasing painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, and more, plus a special 40th anniversary Artist Showcase. Visitors can also watch graffiti artist Rich Dennard create a collaborative mural on Saturday, join Chalk Spot street art on a closed downtown street (Saturday only, $10 to participate, benefiting the Marietta High School Visual Arts Program), and help the Marietta Arts Council build a textile American flag in honor of the nation's 250th anniversary.
Kids can enjoy Children's Art Alley all three days, and everyone can relax with live music at the square's gazebo, browse local shops and galleries, and grab a bite at the many restaurants surrounding the square.
Marietta Art in the Park is the only fine art festival in Cobb County and has earned recognition from Sunshine Artist Magazine and the Southeast Tourism Society, drawing around 55,000 visitors each year.

Grammy-nominated
jazz bassist Rodney Jordan and his quintet will perform selections
from their chart-topping album Memphis
Blue and
will premiere new works written specifically for this concert
celebrating their long-standing friendships in Atlanta. Memphis
Blue
spent 26 weeks on the JazzWeek Top 100 Chart, hovering in the top 10
for several weeks, and was one of the highest-charting independent
releases.

 


Considered
a love letter home to his native Memphis, Jordan says,“Memphis
Blue
is not a typical blues recording but if you listen closely, every
piece has that thread running through it. There’s an optimism in
the way we play that embodies the blues spirit.”

 


Known
for his deep groove, melodic clarity, and commanding ensemble
presence, Rodney Jordan is a widely respected artist, composer, and
bandleader. He has performed nationally and internationally at major
jazz venues and festivals and has been featured in numerous jazz
publications. The Memphis native leads the Rodney Jordan Quintet
whose Memphis
Blue project
blends original compositions with modern interpretations of the jazz
tradition with a blues-inspired sensibility. Deeply committed to 
preparing students for professional careers in music, Jordan serves
as Professor of Jazz Bass and the Coordinator of Jazz and Commercial
Music at Florida State University.

Atlanta’s
own Kenny
Banks Jr., a
Yamaha artist, has earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic
jazz artists in the Southeast and
headlines
the November 13 concert. Noted for his distinctive technique of
blending jazz and gospel styles, Banks’s repertoire also includes
flavors of Afro-Cuban and hip-hop sounds gathered from performing and
recording around the world with a variety of artists.

 


A
brilliant solo artist, Banks is also a regular on tour with vocalist
Kurt Elling and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. He began playing the
piano at age seven, and in his training with his father, Kenny Banks
Sr., also a pianist, he learned the fundamentals of music theory,
jazz, and composition. Under the guidance of his mother, a church
music director, he found the church to be his first musical outlet.
In his career Kenny has performed and toured with such jazz
luminaries as Theo Croker, Darren English, Jennifer Holiday, Jazzmeia
Horn, and Kenny Lattimore. 


He
performs regularly in New York at jazz clubs and with the Jazz at
Lincoln Center Orchestra, and his artistry has enhanced numerous film
and television productions originating in Atlanta.

for his “deeply embodied gospel and soul roots,” Kenny’s

Inspired by dialogues with Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientists and
examining the arts as a celebration of our brains during her jazz
residency at&nbsp;Columbia
University’s
prestigious Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute,&nbsp;Helen
Sung's&nbsp;Live
Wire&nbsp;Project
is music&nbsp;about
bird song, the electric dance of neurons, and the wonders of our
shared humanity.

has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s
New Jazz Works program funded through the Doris Duke Charitable
Foundation.

 


Pianist,
composer, and a Guggenheim Fellow, Helen Sung has worked with such
luminaries as Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis and the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and the
Mingus Big Band. She currently serves on the faculties of the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music and Columbia University, where she
was the inaugural jazz artist-in-residence at its Zuckerman Institute
exploring intersections of jazz and neuroscience.

 


The
quintet includes piano, bass, drums, saxophone, and DJ.

influence of three of the most iconic voices in American music - the
Ladies of Jazz: Ella, Billie, and Sarah
on Friday, March 12, 2027. With style and heart, Maria has an uncanny
ability to inhabit the spirit of each legend while making their songs
uniquely her own. Beloved standards, soulful ballads, and swinging
favorites will stir memories and delight as she honors the music and
legacy of these extraordinary women.

 


As
a song stylist and actor, Maria Howell has owned the stage—from
jazz clubs, festivals, and theaters across the U.S. as well as
numerous film productions. She began her career as the choir soloist
in the film The
Color Purple
and has appeared in The
Vampire Diaries,
Mississippi
Damned,
The
Blind Side,
The
Hunger Games:
Catching
Fire,
and, currently, the popular soap opera Beyond
the Gates.
She regularly appears in a duo act with Noel Freidline and with
Atlanta’s Jazz Legacy Project. Maria also stars frequently at the
Jazz Corner, the award-winning jazz club on Hilton Head Island, and
her distinctive voice can be heard in commercials, video games, and
audiobook narrations.
