DOs and DON'Ts of Being Single on Valentine's Day

What you should and shouldn't do if you are single in Midtown on Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day can be a tough day for single people, especially in a place like Midtown, where couples from around Atlanta come for a magical night.

In honor of my hatred for the holiday, I've compiled a list of a dozen DOs and DON'Ts for this most dreaded day:

DON'T go anywhere near the Fox Theatre or Woodruff Arts Center. The plethora of couples holding hands will make you queasy.

DO go to the gym. Anyone spending their night working out is likely to be single, too. And even if you don't meet anyone, you'll be that much closer to scoring rock-hard abs.

DON'T sit at home and watch television by yourself. Valentine's Day programming is likely to include romantic movies that will make you cry.

DO listen to the radio. At 6:30 p.m., will air a show about "the history, lore, legacy, culture and character" of Peachtree Street. Host Gene Kansas will talk with experts including David Green of Perkins+Will, Mark McDonald with the Georgia Trust and Shannon Powell of the Midtown Alliance. Find more details here

DON'T buy yourself a card, chocolates or flowers on Valentine's Day.

DO buy yourself a card, chocolates or flowers after Valentine's Day. They will be half off!!

DON'T think about that guy or girl you wanted to ask you out for Valentine's Day. That's depressing, folks ...

DO have imaginary flings with people you meet on the street. What a healthy way to experiment!

DON'T sit on your couch and eat bonbons. That's sad.

DO go out and buy an ice cream maker. A friend told me that you add an entire roll of cookie dough if you make the ice cream yourself. You know there is never enough cookie dough in the store-bought brands.

DON'T get desperate and call your ex. Come on now, you broke up for a reason! You'll regret it later if you re-open that can of worms.

DO call your friends, family and co-workers. Just because you are single on Valentine's Day doesn't mean that you have no love in your life. Tell the people that care about you just how much you care for them.

Special thanks to Jessica Grimes, Ed Smith, Caleb Spivak and Joe Maxwell for helping a single girl compile this list. Y'all have my heart :)
